It’s not news that models have been reading. The world, or rather, Instagram, is very aware that Bella Hadid likes Stephen King’s The Outsider while her sister Gigi prefers Albert Camus’s The Stranger. Kendall Jenner has also joined this model book club. She skipped out on Paris Fashion Week and recently showed up on a yacht off the coast of somewhere sand-strewn. As for her seaside attire, her bikinis have been skimpy and barely-there—as in high-strung French cuts, in shades of lime green and eye-catching floral prints. Her reading, on the other hand? It’s been heavy. The model has been beefing up her book lists, specifically with How to Cure a Ghost by Fariha Róisín, clutched by the model’s French manicured hands, and So Sad Today: Personal Essays by Melissa Broder, which the model artfully tabbed with green Post-Its. (Attention to detail is key!). Jenner posed for one photo beside a copy of The Houseguest: And Other Stories by Amparo Davila stacked upon Róisín’s book.
For the uninitiated, Róisín is a queer Muslim writer based in Brooklyn. Her book How To Cure a Ghost consists of poetry that explores trauma and oppression, both physical and emotional. Vogue’s Christian Allaire interviewed Roison back in September in which she said, “In a weird way, poetry is a canvas that allows you to be hyperreal.” The other book, So Sad Today by Melissa Broder, is a collection of essays that deal with the author’s struggle with anxiety and depression. The book is based off of her once-anonymous Twitter account @sosadtoday in which she divulged her daily, often dark, feelings. Lastly, The Houseguest by Mexican author Amparo Davila is a collection of short stories that delve into concepts of paranoia and obsession. This isn’t the first time that Jenner has been reading on vacation, either. Back in May, she was spotted hanging out with Luka Sabbat by a pool and reading Literally Show Me a Healthy Person by Twitter-beloved author Darcie Wilder. What will she be reading next? We’ll be waiting to see the next page-turner.
