Planning on gifting mom a bouquet this Sunday? You’re not alone: Mother’s Day, reports Fortune, “is like the Super Bowl for florists.” It makes sense if you think about it: Sprung from Mother Nature, flowers are the symbol of femininity, which explains why many designers are often petal pushers. Think of Christian Dior, whose ideal, in 1947, was a femme fleur; or Dries Van Noten, a noted green thumb. For Fall, the Belgian created a floral print, using blooms from his own garden that were photographed to look three-dimensional.
Pluckiness is what distinguished designers’ use of flowers for Fall, as petals and stems were built out from base fabrics with embroidery, appliqué, and attached corsages, notably at Prada. Paco Rabanne’s Julien Dossena crafted a rose from chain mail; silvered blooms also showed up at Comme des Garçons. Sarah Burton magically attached rose-like sleeves to an elegant and slim black pantsuit at Alexander McQueen, while Jacquemus opted for a more naive approach, slipping the stems of fresh cuts through small golden ring embellishments, freckling a creamy white suit that was anything but garden variety.
